- The breed and coat type, from wire coated terriers to silky or feathered coats.
- The time needed to work through a full coat by hand.
- How long since the last strip, since an overgrown coat takes longer.

Good questions
Before you begin.
Which dogs are hand stripped?
Many wire coated terriers and some spaniels and wire haired hounds. Ask a groomer whether your dog's coat suits it.
Why not just clip the coat?
Clipping cuts the hair through, which can soften the texture and fade the colour on some wire coats. Stripping keeps the coat harsher and weatherproof.
Does it hurt?
Done at the right time, with a coat that is ready to come out, most dogs tolerate it. A groomer may stop if the dog is uncomfortable.
How often does it need doing?
Many coats are stripped every few months, and some owners keep a rolling schedule with shorter tidy-ups in between.
