Pudsey Park is a well-loved Victorian-era green space with open lawns, tidy paths and a playground. For coats, it is largely gentle. The main hazards are post-rain puddles on the paths and the odd game of chase on wet grass, which leaves soaked belly hair. A towel dry at the gate stops the damp from reaching your car seats.
Fulneck Valley drops steeply below the old Moravian settlement, and the paths there are narrow, wet and shaded. Mud holds well in the shade, and the slopes send dogs sliding, so legs and bellies get the worst of it. Short coated dogs shrug it off, whereas curly coats such as cockapoos and labradoodles hold on to every clod.
Calverley Wood is damp ancient woodland, and its floor is a thick layer of leaf mould. In autumn the leaves decay and cling to the coat, and conker cases and sweet chestnut husks can snag in hair too. Brush through the coat on the same day, because dried leaf litter that stays in the coat starts to knot with the fur.
Pudsey has a mix of semi-detached family homes and older terraces, and dogs there range from active spaniels and collies to small companion breeds. Collies and other double coated dogs benefit from an undercoat rake a couple of times a year. Smaller companion dogs often need a regular full groom to keep eyes and paws tidy.

- Ask each groomer how they work, whether they cover Pudsey and how they handle a nervous dog.
- Pick one brushing spot after your usual walk around Pudsey Park, Fulneck Valley and Calverley Wood and do it every time for a fortnight.

Good questions
Before you begin.
Should I brush a muddy dog before bathing?
Usually, once the mud has dried. Brush out the loose dirt first, then wash, because wet mud can turn into a paste.
How often should a collie be groomed?
Brush the coat weekly, with a bath and a deep de-shedding session every couple of months, especially in moulting season.
Do curly coated dogs need professional grooming?
Most do. Their coats keep growing and tangle easily, so regular grooms every six to eight weeks are common.
