The Chevin Forest Park rises above the town, and it is a very different place for a coat to be. Pine needles, resin and fine sticky sap pick up on feathering and tail hair, and bracken grows thick along the lower slopes. Sap cannot be washed out with water alone, so ask a groomer for advice rather than pulling at it, which can hurt.
Wharfemeadows Park runs along the river and has a wide grass bank where dogs love to roll. Rolling usually means fox muck or something worse, and the smell is notoriously stubborn. Bathe with a good dog shampoo, work it through the coat for several minutes and rinse well. Two washes may be needed to shift the worst of it.
The River Wharfe itself is lively in spring and after heavy rain, and the water carries silt and plant material into the coat. Dogs that swim regularly need a complete dry afterwards, because a damp undercoat is the setting for hot spots and smells. Retrievers and spaniels often need a thorough blow dry and a de-shedding session after summer swimming.
Farm tracks around Otley are muddy and often shared with livestock, so coats pick up not just clay but manure and straw. A hose-down outside before coming indoors saves the kitchen floor. Working breeds like collies and spaniels do well on a regular bath and brush schedule, while terriers may want a hand strip.

- Look at your dog's coat and decide whether it needs a trim, a wash or a rescue from tangles.
- Ask each groomer how they work, whether they cover Otley and how they handle a nervous dog.
- Pick one brushing spot after your usual walk around the Chevin Forest Park, Wharfemeadows Park and the River Wharfe and do it every time for a fortnight.

Good questions
Before you begin.
How do I remove pine sap from fur?
Do not pull it. Ask a groomer or vet for a pet-safe method, since some household products are unsuitable for dogs.
What helps if my dog rolls in something smelly?
Bathe with a dog shampoo, leave it on for a few minutes, rinse well and repeat if needed. A groomer can help if the smell stays.
Can my dog's coat cause skin problems after swimming?
A damp undercoat can irritate skin, so dry thoroughly after a swim. Speak to your vet if you see redness or sore patches.
