Shibden Park is a large, hilly park with a boating lake, woodland slopes and open meadow. The lake edge is soft clay in wet weather, and dogs that wade in come out coated in a grey mud that dries hard. Let it dry, brush it off the legs and belly, then wash. Trying to rub it out while it is wet just spreads it deeper.
Savile Park is open grassland, locally known for wide skies and wind. The grass there is short and kind to coats, but the wind drives fine dust and seeds into the fur on windy dry days. Dogs with long, fine coats such as Afghans, setters and Maltese pick up tangles quickly in the wind, so brush through at the end of the day.
Calderdale is a steep, wet valley, and rain here arrives often. Wet-weather matting is the main grooming problem: the damp builds up under harnesses, collars and raincoats, and the friction felts the hair into stubborn mats. Take the harness off at home, dry the coat and run a comb through the armpits and under the collar daily.
The canal basin paths are flat and popular with owners of smaller dogs. Hard towpaths wear down nails a little but not enough, and the water is tempting for terriers and spaniels. Many Halifax dogs are wire coated or silky breeds, so a mix of regular trimming and occasional hand stripping makes sense. A groomer can advise on how often your dog's coat needs attention.

- Look at your dog's coat and decide whether it needs a trim, a wash or a rescue from tangles.
- Ask each groomer how they work, whether they cover Halifax and how they handle a nervous dog.
- Pick one brushing spot after your usual walk around Shibden Park, Savile Park and the canal basin paths and do it every time for a fortnight.

Good questions
Before you begin.
How do I remove dried clay from my dog's coat?
Let it dry fully, then brush it out with a slicker and comb. Bathe afterwards. Wetting it first often makes it harder to remove.
Can a raincoat cause matting?
It can, if a damp coat rubs against the lining. Take it off indoors, dry the coat and check the chest and armpits.
Is the lake safe for dogs to swim in?
Check any local signs for blue-green algae warnings and ask your vet if you are unsure. Rinse and dry your dog after a swim.
