Where dogs walk
Wellholme Park, the canal basin and Cromwell Bottom

Wellholme Park is a neat, flat municipal park with bowling greens, lawns and paths. It is a favourite for short outings, and the main grooming concern there is just everyday upkeep. A quick brush, a paw wipe and a regular nail trim keep a dog looking smart, and small dogs such as shih tzus and bichons suit a groom every four to six weeks.

The canal basin is a pleasant place to walk, with moored boats and a flat path. Waterside mud is greasy and carries a smell that clings to the coat, particularly around the beard and chest of dogs that sniff the bank. A face wash and a beard comb after a basin walk keep that smell from setting in.

Cromwell Bottom is a nature reserve on the river flats, and it is wetter and rougher than the park. Reeds, standing water, silt and thick undergrowth catch on feathering and leave burr-like seeds behind. Spaniels and setters in particular come out with leg feathering clogged with debris, and a trim of the feathering at the next groom makes later cleaning much easier.

Owners here often have working breed crosses, lurchers and terriers. Smooth coats are easy, but wire coats grow out thick and shaggy. A hand strip or a clipper trim every few months keeps a wiry coat in shape, and a bath only when really needed protects the natural oils. Ask a groomer what the coat actually needs rather than guessing from the breed.

Three things to do first.

  1. Look at your dog's coat and decide whether it needs a trim, a wash or a rescue from tangles.
  2. Ask each groomer how they work, whether they cover Brighouse and how they handle a nervous dog.
  3. Pick one brushing spot after your usual walk around Wellholme Park, the canal basin and Cromwell Bottom and do it every time for a fortnight.

Good questions

Before you begin.

How do I get the canal smell out of my dog?

A bath with a dog shampoo, a thorough rinse and a full dry usually helps. Dry the coat completely, because damp fur holds smells.

Should I trim my spaniel's feathering?

Many owners trim it shorter for walks in wet or rough places. A groomer can leave enough for the breed's look while keeping it manageable.

How often does a wire coated dog need grooming?

It varies, but many wire coats are stripped or trimmed every few months with brushing in between.
