What sets the price and the outcome
- How much of the coat is matted and how close the knots sit to the skin.
- Whether the whole coat needs a short clip for the dog's comfort.
- The length of the session and how many breaks the dog needs.
- The dog's temperament and tolerance of handling.
- Skin condition underneath, which may need a vet check.
- Whether a follow-up visit is needed once the coat regrows.

Good questions
Before you begin.
Why did my groomer suggest shaving the coat?
Tight mats can be painful to brush out and may cause skin damage. A short clip is often kinder than hours of pulling, and the coat grows back.
How can I stop mats coming back?
Brush and comb down to the skin often, especially behind the ears, under the legs and around the collar and harness, and always after a wet walk.
Does de-matting hurt?
It should not. Ask how the groomer works, and expect breaks. A groomer may stop if the dog is stressed.
Should a vet check the skin?
If you see redness, sores or a smell under the mats, ask your vet. Some skin problems need treatment as well as grooming.
